WENDY’S CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC
FAQ’S (Frequently Asked Questions)

FUNDING

Where does the money go?
Funds raised by the Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic support adoption. The funds are sent to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption and administered to our local beneficiary by DTFA. DTFA reviews the beneficiary to make sure it meets specified criteria, such as being a 501c3 organization and providing foster care and special needs adoptions.

Who do I make the check out to?
All checks are made payable to Stanton Charity for Children. Stanton Charity for Children collects fees and pays expenses associated with the tournament. Remaining funds after expenses are sent to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption so that they can be re-distributed accordingly to pre-determined, qualifying benefactors.

How does this work as a tax deduction?
Stanton Charity for Children is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Donations are deductible as contributions to any charity would be. Most individuals will need to be itemizing on their personal income tax return to claim charitable donations. (You may need to talk with your tax professional to determine your situation.) We will provide you with a receipt detailing the portion of your payment which may be deductible. The value of goods and services that you receive must be subtracted from the donated amount. If you receive no goods or services, the entire amount of your donation may be deductible.

Does this event help the Dave Thomas Foundation?
Yes. Funds being raised by this event support adoption. A small portion of the proceeds goes to the Dave Thomas Foundation for their assistance with event administration.

What, specifically, am I supporting with my donation?
If you are a past participant or a participant referred by the local tournament steering team, your donations support programs of The Adoption Resource Center within Family Services & Children’s Aid. If you have been referred by the adoption agency in your community to participate in or sponsor the event, your donation (after expenses) will be earmarked for your local adoption agency.

Is this a local event for Jackson businesses only?
No. Anyone can make a donation, sponsor or play in the event.

How can I get my local adoption agency involved?
Adoption agencies across Michigan have been invited to raise funds for their own organizations by referring sponsors and players to our tournament. To get your agency involved, have the director contact our Tournament Director.

BENEFICIARY

What is FSCA?
Family Service & Children’s Aid strengthens the emotional health and functioning of children, adults and families through counseling, education, advocacy and program development.

What is The Adoption Resource Center?
The Adoption Resource Center opened in January 2000 and is located within the Family Service & Children’s Aid facility. The Center provides educational presentations to the community, facilitates the adoption of domestic and international infants and children with special needs and offers a means of support to those whose lives have been touched by adoption. Funds generated by the Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic helped start and now help maintain the Adoption Resource Center.

How much money goes to the local beneficiary?
Past Classics have generated over $200,000 to open and maintain the Adoption Resource Center for nearly four years. We are increasing our annual contribution starting this year by making the Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic an annual event.

What have they done with the money so far?
Proceeds from the Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic helped open The Adoption Resource Center. They were able to hire a full time director for the Center, provide staff training, meet and counsel prospective adoptive families and place a number of foster care and special needs children in loving homes. After the second tournament, the ARC was able to add part-time staff to assist the director and facilitate program growth. FSCA and the ARC have received favorable evaluations from the Dave Thomas Foundation regarding the grants they were awarded by Stanton Charities for Children through the Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic.

Can I play with the same pro I played with last time?
Yes. It’s quite possible this would work out for you – let us know who you played with and we will make every effort to reunite your team!

How did you get the LPGA to come to Jackson?!
Elaine Crosby is a Jackson resident and friend of David and Laura Stanton of Stanton & Associates, Inc. Stanton & Associates, Inc. owns and operates 55 Wendy’s locations in mid-Michigan. In 1999, David and Laura wanted to start an LPGA Pro-Am to raise money for Stanton Charities for Children to support adoption causes. They called Elaine – and the rest is history!

TOURNAMENT

Is the event handicapped?
Yes. The PGA Professionals at the Country Club of Jackson will handle the scoring and handicapping of the event.

What if I don’t have a handicap?
We’ll ask you what you typically shoot for 9 or 18 and use a pre-determined formula to assign an appropriate handicap for you prior to play.

Can I ask the pro I’m playing with for help with my game?
Sure! Have fun out there and try to learn something new.

How hard is the course?
The Country Club if Jackson is one of the finest courses in the state and has been host to numerous competitions, including the Michigan Amateur in 2002. It is a mature, challenging course with smooth greens and rolling fairways. CCJ features three separate 9’s – the Pines, the Woods and the Marsh, each with its own unique qualities. Traditionally, the Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic has been played on the Pines and the Woods, so prepare to hit it down the middle and avoid that tree trouble! The rough is not unkind, but the fairway is your best option on any course….

What is the format?
Four amateurs and one pro make up each team. The format is a scramble: everyone tees off, the team selects the best position to hit the second shot from. Everyone hits the second shot from that position. The team then selects the best shot out of those approaches, and then every one hits the third shot from there, and so on. A team handicap is calculated based on individual handicaps and applied to the teams final score for 18 to determine the winners.

What should I wear?
The Country Club dress code is golf shirts with sleeves and collars and Bermuda length shorts or regular pants for men. No denim. No tank tops. Shirts for women may be sleeveless if they have a collar. Shirts for woman do not require a collar if they have sleeves. Bermuda length Khaki shorts, Capri pants, long khaki pants or golf skirts are welcome. No denim. Soft spikes required.

How do I write off the money I have donated as a player?
Stanton Charity for Children is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. Donations are deductible as contributions to any charity would be. Most individuals will need to be itemizing on their personal income tax return to claim charitable donations. (You may need to talk with your tax professional to determine your situation.) We will provide you with a receipt detailing the portion of your payment which may be deductible. The value of goods and services that you receive must be subtracted from the donated amount. If you receive no goods or services, the entire amount of your donation may be deductible.

Is there a limit to the number of players in the field?

VOLUNTEERS

What can I volunteer to do?
The Wendy’s Charity Golf Classic welcomes volunteer help in all aspects of putting on the tournament, from planning and sponsorship sales leading up to the tournament to actual event day set-up and execution. If you are available to assist with set-up, registration, scoring, hole sitting/witness, day care, program sales, concession sales, parking, ticket sales, hospitality, security, first aid, auction item donations, party decorations, clean-up, and many more volunteer opportunities, please sign up on-line or give us a call!

How do I register as a volunteer?
Click here to sign up on-line or call Tournament Director Sue Fracker at (517) 784-4094 ext 145 to get a registration form.

I’m not much of a golfer – should I bother volunteering?
Yes! Volunteers are needed to help with the party set-up and auctions the night before the tournament. On the day of the event, you don’t have to be a golfer to help out – we need all kinds of people to assist with non-golf related efforts, from keeping an eye on the LPGA players’ children to supplying beverages and ice on the course to manning the doors of the club house for security. Knowing a little bit about the game helps, but it isn’t necessary for many of our volunteer positions. If you are an avid golfer, we can definitely use you for scorekeeping and on-course activity.

What do volunteers wear?
Golf shirts bearing the tournament logo will be provided to volunteers. You will be asked for a size when you register. We ask that you please where navy shorts or slacks with these shirts. Denim is not permitted.

How do I find out what I will be doing after I volunteer?
Volunteers will be notified of their positions by August 1 and sent a confirmation letter. You will be invited to attend a volunteer orientation meeting on Thursday, August 14 at 7:00 p.m. at the Country Club of Jackson to pick up your shirt and learn more about your assignment. This meeting is a few days before the event.

How long will I have to be there?
The volunteer meeting on Thursday will last about an hour and include a light snack and beverages. Set-up for the Pairings Party starts early afternoon on Sunday and leads up to the party at 6:00 p.m., so you could be asked to put in 1-3 hours if you are available that day. The golf day starts Monday morning with registration and breakfast at 8:00 a.m. The tournament itself is a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start, meaning all the teams tee off at the same time on different holes at 10:00 a.m. They usually play for 5 hours and finish up between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m. The awards dinner follows golf and usually finishes by 5:30 p.m. Clean-up is usually complete between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. Depending on your assignment and the amount of time you are willing to give, you could work anywhere from 1 to 6 hours throughout the event, probably in shifts of no more than two hours at a time.

What if I have to back out?
We understand emergencies happen and circumstances change. If you cannot make it after all it is VERY important that you call to say you cannot make it. This will give us an opportunity to replace you prior to the start of the event instead of at the event when we suddenly realize you’re not coming.

Can I bring a friend or family member to hang out with?
Friends and family are welcome to volunteer right alongside you, but they must be at least 18 years old and registered as an official volunteer also. We will only provide shirts to official volunteers who are actually working the event. Your children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult other than yourself who can watch them while you are working.

Do I need a special pass to get in?
You will be sent a Volunteer Pass with your confirmation letter. This will allow you to get in and park for free. You must wear this pass and your volunteer shirt while working at the event. We will encourage volunteers to car pool to help conserve parking space.

Where do I park?
You will be directed where to park when you arrive at the course for the day of the event.

Can I eat for free?
Meals and beverages for volunteers and players during the event are complimentary thanks to the sponsors.

Where do items for the auctions come from?
